I am an experienced general manager who loves running complex technology businesses.  I have served in CEO and COO roles, and I have a particularly strong interest in operational leadership in growing companies.  I like putting together all of the puzzle pieces: going global, scalable processes & systems, and mechanisms for linking day-to-day activities with financial performance.  And in spite of a few battle scars, I continue to believe that workplaces can be fun and that most people thrive on working together to create something larger than themselves.

As an electrical engineer by training, I understand and have a genuine interest in technology.  Most of my experience has been with companies that design behind-the-scenes software and hardware used in the television, film, and digital media industries. Video technology, including contemporary file-based workflow, is therefore a particular area of expertise.  Since I can also speak the business language of media executives, I’m able to help bridge the gap between media technology and business – an ever-widening gulf in this rapidly evolving digital media age!

I am presently working as a free agent, providing consulting services on both general business matters and media-specific issues.  But I miss being part of a long-term team, so during 2010 I hope to join a growing business in a leadership capacity.

About The COO Blog

During my 20+ years as a business leader, I have been dropped into complete operational chaos on a number of occasions – guided only by instructions to "fix this". No amount of training is sufficient to fully prepare one for the initial experience. But after baptism by fire, I found that subsequent operating challenges became less traumatic and distinct patterns started to emerge.

Over time, I have developed sound operational instincts and assembled a set of general-purpose management tools that can be adapted to various circumstances. Every situation is unique and certain lessons can only be learned the hard way, but some of my operational leadership expertise can be shared – and so I offer this blog.
